From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (bcšk'), 𐫁𐫉𐫏𐫢𐫐 (bzyšk /bizešk/, “doctor, physician”), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *bišajkah. Compare Iranian borrowing Old Armenian բժիշկ (bžišk). Further related to Sanskrit भिषज्यति (bhiṣajyati, “to heal”), भिषज् (bhiṣaj, “curing; medicine; doctor”).
