Inherited from Sauraseni Apabhramsa पहिल (pahila), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀳𑀺𑀮 (pahila), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑁆𑀭𑀣𑀺𑀮𑁆𑀮 (*prathilla). Sanskrit प्रथम (prathamá, first) was reanalyzed as having an ordinal suffix -म (-ma), which was replaced by Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-illa-).[1]
