From earlier چاکو (čâku) from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ckwc /čakuč/, hammer), from Avestan 𐬗𐬀𐬐𐬎𐬱 (cakuš, battle-axe), from Proto-Indo-European *keku- (cudgel, hammer shaped stick). Related to Ottoman Turkish چاقی (çakı).
