Borrowed from Classical Persian چناب (čanāb), ultimately from Sanskrit चन्द्रभागा (candrabhāgā). Compare Punjabi جَھناں (jhanāṉ) / چَنھاں (canhāṉ) / ਝਨਾਂ (jhanā̃) and Saraiki چَنان٘ہہ (canāṉh).
