Borrowed from Classical Persian ‎ (čanāb), ultimately from Sanskrit चन्द्रभागा (candrabhāgā). Compare Punjabi جَھناں‎ (jhanāṉ) / چَنھاں‎ (canhāṉ) / ਝਨਾਂ (jhanā̃) and Saraiki چَنان٘ہہ‎ (canāṉh).
