Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit [script needed] (gāmaddha), from Sanskrit ग्रामार्ध (grāmārdha, vicinity of village), compound of ग्राम (grā́ma, village) + अर्ध (árdha, half; side; place). Compare Saraiki گَوان٘ڈھ (gavāṉḍh) / گَواڈھ (gavāḍh) and Marathi गांवधें (gāuvdhẽ).
