Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܡܵܪܝ (“mār”, literally “My lord”). The original, Classical meaning of “My lord” is not felt and this word is only used as a title for saints. Corresponds to ܡܵܪܝܼ mārī, “My lord”. See ܡܵܪܵܐ (mārā).
