From Aramaic תַּרְתַעֵסְרֶא (tarṯaʿesrē). Equivalent to ܬܲܪܬܹܝܢ (tartēyn, two) + ܥܸܣܲܪ (ʿisar, ten); compare Arabic اِثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ (iṯnatā ʕašrata) and Hebrew שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה (shtém 'esré).
