Etymology

A late Vedic corruption of an earlier *आन्द्र (āndra), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hāndrám, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁en-dr-óm, from *h₁én (in). Compare Kalasha ónḍrak (egg), Proto-Slavic *ędro (kernel).

      That secret name borne by the lowing cattle within the cave Bṛhaspati discovered,
      And drove, himself, the bright kine from the mountain, like a bird's young after the egg's breaking.
