Borrowed from Persian آواز (âvâz), from Middle Persian ʾwʾz (āwāz), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wṓkʷs. Cognate with Sanskrit वाच् (vā́c) and Latin vōx. Doublet of वाक् (vāk).
