Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘎𑘻𑘚𑘹𑘽 (koḍeṃ, a problem; a riddle), 𑘎𑘳𑘁𑘚𑘹𑘽 (kuāḍeṃ, a puzzle; a riddle) (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀓𑀽𑀟 (kūḍa), Sanskrit कूट (kūṭa)). Compare Gujarati કૂડું (kūḍũ, fraudulent, treacherous), Sindhi ڪُوڙو / कूड़ो, ڪُوَڙو / कुवड़ो, Punjabi ਕੂੜਾ (kūṛā) / کُوڑا (kūṛā), Sinhalese කුළු (kuḷu, false).
