Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀮𑀻 (*galī). Cognate with Punjabi ਗਲੀ (galī) / گَلی (galī), Gujarati ગલી (galī), Sindhi ڳَليِ / ॻली, Marathi गल्ली (gallī), Bengali গলি (goli). Cognate with Latin callis, Italian calle and Spanish calle, meaning street, lane or path.
