Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀙𑀼𑀝𑁆𑀝 (chuṭṭa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit *क्षुट्ट (kṣuṭṭa), from *क्षुट् (kṣuṭ, to release, root)[1] + -त (-ta, -ed). Compare छूटना (chūṭnā, to be released) and छूट (chūṭ, liberty, freedom). Cognate with Punjabi ਛੁੱਟ (chuṭṭa) / چُھٹّ (chuṭṭ), Gujarati છુટ્ટું (chuṭṭũ), Marathi सुटे (suṭe).
