Learned borrowing from Sanskrit जामातृ (jā́mātṛ), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ā́mātā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ā́mātā, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵem- (to marry). Doublet of जमाई (jamāī) and दामाद (dāmād).
