From Proto-Indo-Iranian tŕ̥šnaH (“thirst”), from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥s-nó-s, from *ters- (“dry”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬭𐬱𐬥𐬀 (taršna), Persian تشنه (tešne), Ancient Greek τέρσομαι (térsomai), Latin terra, Old Armenian թառամիմ (tʿaṙamim, “I wither”), Old English þurst (whence English thirst). Related to तृष्यति (tṛ́ṣyati).
