Borrowed from Classical Persian دیوانه (dēvāna), from Middle Persian [script needed] (dyw'nk' /dēwānag/, demonic; crazy, insane). Compare Gujarati દીવાનું (dīvānũ), Hindustani دِیوَانَہ / दीवाना (dīvānā), Punjabi ਦਿਵਾਨਾ (divānā), ਦੀਵਾਨਾ (dīvānā) / دِیوانہ (dīvāna).
