From Old Marathi 𑘡𑘰𑘜𑘹𑘽 (nāṇeṁ), 𑘡𑘰𑘡𑘹𑘽 (nāneṁ), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀡𑀸𑀡𑀓 (ṇāṇaka), 𑀡𑀸𑀡𑀕 (ṇāṇaga), from Sanskrit नाणक (nāṇaka). Cognate with Gujarati નાણું (nāṇũ), Sindhi نَاڻو / नाणो (nāṇo).
