Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀸𑀦 (*paṭṭhāna), borrowed from Iranian. Compare Punjabi ਪਠਾਣ (paṭhāṇ), Gujarati પઠાણ (paṭhāṇ), Marathi पठाण (paṭhāṇ), Bengali পাঠান (paṭhan).
