Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘰𑘄 (pāu), 𑘢𑘰𑘊 (pāe), 𑘢𑘰𑘌 (pāo), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀅 (pāa), from Sanskrit पाद (pā́da) / पद् (pád, “foot”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *pā́ts, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pā́ts, and Proto-Indo-European *pṓds. Cognate with Assamese পা (pa), Bengali পা (pa), Dhivehi ފައި (fai), Gujarati પાય (pāya), Hindi पाँव (pā̃v), Rajasthani पाय, Domari pɔw, Sinhalese පය (paya).
