From Proto-Indo-Aryan *praHwŕ̥ṣ, from *pra- (forth) + Proto-Indo-European *h₁wr̥s-, zero-grade of *h₁wers- (to rain). Related to वर्ष (varṣa), वर्षा (varṣā).
