Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰánati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰánati, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰn̥h₂-é-ti, innovative nasal-infixed zero-grade thematic present *bʰeh₂- (“to speak”). Cognate with Ancient Greek φημί (phēmí, “speak”), φάτις (phátis, “rumour, news, speech”), φάσις (phásis, “speech, announcement”), φωνή (phōnḗ, “voice”), Latin fārī (“speak, talk; say”), fama (“news; fame”), fabula (“story, tale, fable”), Old Church Slavonic баяти (bajati, “tell, narrate”) and баснь (basnĭ, “fable”), Russian баять (bajatʹ) and басня (basnja), Old English bannan (whence English ban).
