Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰáHas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰáHas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéh₂os, from *bʰeh₂- (“shine”). Cognate with Ancient Greek φάος (pháos, “radiance, light”) (whence English photo-, phosphorus), and possibly Latin (iu)bar, Old English basu (“purple”).
