Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘡𑘲𑘎𑘘 (manīkaṭa), 𑘦𑘡𑘲𑘐𑘘 (manīgaṭa), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀫𑀡𑀺𑀕𑀁𑀞𑀺 (*maṇigaṃṭhi). Compare Kannada ಮಣಿಕಟ್ಟು (maṇikaṭṭu), Telugu మణికట్టు (maṇikaṭṭu), Tamil மணிக்கட்டு (maṇikkaṭṭu), Malayalam മണിക്കണ്ടം (maṇikkaṇṭaṃ).
