Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘰𑘄𑘭𑘲 (māusī), Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀸𑀉𑀲𑀺 (māusi), from Sanskrit मातुःष्वसृ (mātuḥṣvasṛ, “mother's sister”). Cognate with Hindi मौसी (mausī), Konkani मावशी (māvśī), Punjabi ਮਾਸੀ (māsī) / ماسی (māsī).
