Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hráwdʰitas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hráwdʰitas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (“red”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬌𐬜𐬌𐬙𐬀 (raoiδita), English red. Also related to लोहित (lóhita), लोह (lohá) and रुधिर (rudhira, “red”).
