From Proto-Indo-Aryan *lawkás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *lawkás, from Proto-Indo-European *lowk-ó-s, from *lewk- (“to shine”).

Cognate with Latin lūcus (“sacred grove”), Old English lēah (“open field, meadow”) (whence English lea). Probably unrelated to Latin locus.
