From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáwHatay, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰewH- (“to invoke”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (zauuaiti), Ancient Greek καυχάομαι (kaukháomai), Albanian zulë, Khwarezmian ɣwy- and Proto-Slavic *zъvati (“to call”).
