Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘮𑘰𑘝𑘪𑘚𑘰 (hātavaḍā), from Sanskrit *हस्तकूट (hastakūṭa), a compound of हस्त (hasta, hand) and कूट (kūṭa, hammer). Cognate with Gujarati હથોડો (hathoḍo), Hindi हथौड़ा (hathauṛā), Punjabi ਹਥੌੜਾ (hathauṛā) / ہتھوڑا (hthoṛā).
