Borrowed from Arabic يَاقُوت (yāqūt), which is from Ancient Greek ὑάκινθος (huákinthos), possibly via Sogdian [script needed] (yγwth /yaγūt/, ruby). Cognate with Afar yaagút, Swahili yakuti and Turkish yakut.
