Borrowed from Arabic يَاقُوت‎ (yāqūt), which is from Ancient Greek ὑάκινθος (huákinthos), possibly via Sogdian [script needed] (yγwth /yaγūt/, “ruby”). Cognate with Afar yaagút, Swahili yakuti and Turkish yakut.
