Etymology

Inherited from Old Bengali পিংপডা (piṃpaḍā), nasalized from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀟𑀸 (pippaḍā), from Sanskrit पिप्पीड (pippīḍa) (compare पिपीलिका (pipīlikā), from पिपील (pipīla), a variant of this); beyond that, either it is partially reduplicated from पीड् (pīḍ, “to press, squeeze”) or it is a borrowing from a non-Aryan language.[1] Cognate with Sylheti ꠙꠤꠙꠠꠣ (fifṛa), Assamese পিপৰা (pipora), Oriya ପିମ୍ପୁଡ଼ି (pimpuṛi), Magahi 𑂣𑂱𑂁𑂣𑂚𑂲 (pimpaṛī), 𑂣𑂱𑂣𑂩𑂲 (piprī). Similar nasalization to the first syllable when the last syllable is "ড়া" (formerly "ডা") occurs in কাঁকড়া (kãkṛa, “crab”) and coordinate terms in other Eastern Indo-Aryan languages, probably due to non-Aryan local transformation. Doublet of পিপীলিকা (pipilika).
