Inherited from Prakrit 𑀨𑀺𑀭𑀇 (phiraï), from Sanskrit *‍फिरति (‍phirati). Cognate with Hindi फिरना (phirnā), Gujarati ફરવું (pharvũ), Marathi फिरणे (phirṇe), and Bengali ফেরা (phera).
