Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *nī̆ẓal- (“shade, shadow”). Cognate with Old Kannada ನೆೞಲ್ (neḻal) (whence Kannada ನೆರಳು (neraḷu)), Tamil நிழல் (niḻal) and Malayalam നിഴൽ (niḻal).
