Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *tan-tay (“father”) or Proto-Dravidian *tan-ṯi. Compare Tamil தந்தை (tantai), Telugu తండ్రి (taṇḍri), Kannada ತಂದೆ (tande), Kui (India) [script needed] (tanji), Duruwa तेंद (tend).
