From Proto-Tai *mɤcᴰ (“ant”). Cognate with Lao ມົດ (mot), Northern Thai ᨾᩫ᩠ᨯ, Khün ᨾᩫ᩠ᨯ, Lü ᦷᦙᧆ (mod), Shan မူတ်ႉ (mṵ̂ut), Tai Dam ꪶꪣꪒ, Ahom 𑜉𑜤𑜄𑜫 (mut), Bouyei mod, Zhuang moed. Compare Proto-Be *muːʔᴰ², Proto-Hlai *hmuc.
