From Proto-Tai *soːŋᴬ, from Middle Chinese (MC ʃˠʌŋ, “two”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈᩬᨦ, Lao ສອງ (sǭng), ᦉᦸᧂ (ṡoang), Tai Dam ꪎꪮꪉ, Shan သွင် (sǎung), Tai Nüa ᥔᥩᥒᥴ (sóang), Ahom 𑜏𑜨𑜂𑜫 (soṅ), Bouyei soongl, Zhuang song.

Usage notes

When "two" is at the position of tens, use ยี่ (yîi) as ยี่สิบ (yîi-sìp) instead. There was suggestion to read "two" in a phone number as โท (too), to distinguish from สาม (sǎam), due to dated low-quality voicing technology.
