From Pali sāmañña (“generality; equality; conformity; unity; company”) or Sanskrit सामान्य (sāmānya, “common, general; etc.”). Cognate with Khmer សាមាន្យ (saamiənyɔɔ), សាមញ្ញ (saamaññaʼ), Lao ສາມັນ (sā man), Burmese သာမည (sama.nya.).
