From Proto-Tai *truŋᴬ (“to cook (rice)”), from Middle Chinese 烘 (MC ɦuŋ, huŋ, ɦuŋH, huŋH, “to bake; to dry (on fire)”). Cognate with Lao ຫຸງ (hung), Shan ႁုင် (hǔng), Ahom 𑜍𑜤𑜂𑜫 (rung).
