From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *l-(t/d)jam (full, flat, straight). Related to ཐམ་པ (tham pa), ལྟམས (ltams). Compare also Chinese (OC *kljum, “to pour”) and (OC *lɯm, “excessive”).
