From Old Georgian კუამლი (ḳuamli), from Proto-Kartvelian *ḳwam-l- (smoke), from *ḳwam-, *ḳwm- (to smoke). Cognate with Svan კუ̂ა̄მ (ḳûām, smoking). More distantly related to Mingrelian კუმა (ḳuma) and Laz კომა (ḳoma).
