From Proto-Semitic *ṣ́aʔn- (“small cattle”). Cognates include Ge'ez ሕፃን (ḥəṣ́an) and Tigrinya ሕፃን (ḥəṣ́an).

Usage notes
- The gender of ሕፃን depends on the natural gender of the referent. As such, it may be translated as either baby boy (masculine) or baby girl (feminine) depending on the context. If the natural gender is unknown, the masculine gender is used.
