From Proto-Tungusic *arakïï (alcohol). Compare Evenki аракӣ (arakī), Negidal ajaxïï, Ulch арақи̇ (araqï), Orok арақи̇ (araqï), Nanai арақи̇ (araqï). Also akin to Mongolian архи (arxi). Ultimate origin is from Arabic عَرَقْ (ʕaraq, alcohol).
