From Middle Chinese 廣 (MC kwɑŋX). Cognate with Thai กว้าง (gwâang), Lao ກວ້າງ (kuāng), Lü ᦦᦱᧂᧉ (k̇waang2), Shan ၵႂၢင်ႈ (kwāang), Ahom [Term?], Bouyei gvaangs, Zhuang gvangq. Compare Sui faangc (“wide, broad”), Southern Kam kuangt (“wide, broad”).
