ἀβαρύ

Ancient Macedonian

Etymology

Perhaps cognate to Ancient Greek βαρύ (barú, perfume used in incense).

Related to ἀμάρακον 'origanum', according to Furnée 1972. Cf. also “τινες μὲν φασι θυμίαμα εὐῶδες” 'accoeding to some, an odoriferous incense' (Hesychius); see Latte. The suggestion of Kalléris 1954, who assumes connection with βαρύς as ‘having a strong (heavy) odor’ (with prothetic α) is deemed untenable by Beekes.

Noun

ἀβαρύ (abarú)

  1. oregano, marjoram (translated by Hesychius of Alexandria as ὀρίγανον (oríganon))
