Etymology
A monogram of the capital letters P and L, the first two letters of "Pluto" as well as the initials of Percival Lowell.[1]
Usage notes
(astronomy): ⟨♇⟩ does not appear to have seen formal astronomical use since the reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet in 2006. ⟨⯓⟩ has been used for Pluto as a dwarf planet.
(astrology): Both ⟨♇⟩ and ⟨⯓⟩ are common in astrology. ⟨♇⟩ is universal, due to its early standardization in astronomy, but while use of ⟨⯓⟩ in astrology is global, it is not the preferred symbol in many European countries. (See ⯓ for astrological synonyms.)
