Etymology
A spear, representing the goddess Pallas Athena. Invented soon after discovery in the early 19th century. The head of the spear took on various shapes, depending on typographic convenience, including a triangle △ and a spade ♤ or inverted heart ♡, but is now usually a diamond ◇ or lozenge ◊. The cross at bottom recalls ⟨☿⟩, ⟨♀⟩, ⟨⚳⟩.
