Apophonic form of (なわ) (nawa, seedling, bound form, only used in compounds (e.g. 苗代 (nawashiro, seedling bed))), with the fusion of emphatic nominal particle (i), similar to nouns such as (kamu + i → kami, god) and (ma + i → me, eye).
