パンパン
Japanese
Etymology
The adverb, attested from the 19th century, is onomatopoeic. The related adnominal is attested from the 20th century.[1]
Origin of the noun is unknown, but theories include semantic shift from the onomatopoeia, perhaps in reference to clapping hands to attract a prostitute; or possibly derivation from Indonesian perempuan (“woman”).[2] The noun is attested from the 1940s.[3] Compare English pompom girl, Ilocano pampam, Tagalog pampam, Cebuano pampam, Waray-Waray pampam.
