Etymology

From Old Japanese, in turn from Middle Chinese 巫術 (MC mɨo ʑiuɪt̚). Formerly read with the kan'on as bujutsu.[1] Compare modern Min Nan reading bû-su̍t.

First attested in a portion of the Shoku Nihongi completed in 717.[1]
