Etymology
From Tibetan དར་རྩེ་མདོ (dar rtse mdo) (Ma, 1987). Written as 打煎爐/打煎炉 in the Ming dynasty.
Folk etymology derives the place name from the legend of Shu Han chancellor and military strategist Zhuge Liang, during his southern campaign, dispatching a general called Guo Da (郭達) to set up furnaces and forge arrows there. However, Guo Da may not be an actual historical figure.
