Etymology

From Middle Chinese compound 描畫 (MC mˠiᴇu ɦˠuɛH, “to sketch, to depict + drawing, painting, picture”). The Japanese term uses the 漢音 (kan'on) reading of byō for the first character, rather than the older 呉音 (goon) of myō, suggesting a possible reborrowing or influence from a later stage or dialect of Chinese. Compare modern Min Nan readings biâu, biô, with initial /b/.
