Etymology

Ultimately from Middle Chinese 疑問 (MC ŋɨ mɨunH, literally “doubt, suspicion + ask”), apparently borrowed later as a learned borrowing from Literary Chinese of the same source term.

First attested in the early 1600s.[1]
